Sky-Bound: Becoming a Pilot

With the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-mandated age 65 retirement for commercial pilots, the U.S. airline industry is bracing for a possible shortage of professionals manning the cockpit. In fact, even aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing foresee a vast number of unmanned cockpit seats over the next two decades. The company projects that airlines worldwide will need more than half a million pilots, and North America alone will require around 100,000.

Thus, now is the best time to train to become a pilot. And for those located in Southern Minnesota, North Star Aviation offers programs for people eyeing a career in professional flight and even those who are just interested in flying just for fun. With its partnership with Minnesota State University Mankato (MSU), North Star Aviation provides aviation students with state-of-the-art flight training. This also includes ensuring that students have met all requirements such as a completed FAA medical exam prior to starting their training.

Graduates meanwhile can apply at North Star Aviation as flight instructors to accumulate the additional 700 to 800 flight hours needed before working for an airline. And with such offerings in its aviation program, MSU have seen a spike in its number of enrollees these past few years.

While the path to becoming an aviation professional may be a laborious one, all the training, education, and flight hours are necessary to ensure that the future pilot is indeed capable and highly skilled in flying an aircraft. After all, the safety of passengers is in the pilot’s hands.
